House GOP Weekly Radio Address
Posted by Rep. John Boehner on June 27, 2009

Today, I delivered the weekly Republican radio address.  As unemployment in both Ohio and our nation continues to rise, Washington Democrats are pursuing policies on the economy, health care, energy and the environment that will destroy more American jobs and drive future generations into deeper debt.  Click the photo below to watch me deliver the address; the transcript follows.

“I’m John Boehner, House Republican Leader.  When I’m home in Ohio, I get an earful about the crushing debt Washington Democrats are running up.  The President and Democrats in Congress claim this spending binge is necessary to put Americans back to work.  They promised unemployment would not rise above eight percent if their trillion-dollar ‘stimulus’ was passed.  But our nation has lost nearly three million jobs this year.  Unemployment has soared above nine percent.  And now the President admits that unemployment will soon reach double-digits.  After all of this spending, after all of this borrowing from China, the Middle East, our children, and our grandchildren, where are the jobs?

“It’s about to get worse for middle-class families and small businesses.  Democrats are pushing a government takeover of our health care system that will cost at least a trillion dollars.  The President has repeatedly claimed that Americans will be able to keep their doctors under the Democrats’ plan, but the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reports that at least 23 million Americans would lose their current health coverage and their doctors.  Another independent report projects that nearly 100 million Americans may be forced onto government rolls.

“Our nation could lose an additional 4.7 million jobs under the Democrats’ health care proposal, based on analysis developed by White House chief economic advisor, Dr. Christina Romer.  And one million small business jobs would be lost because of the Democrats’ costly mandates.

“Small businesses are the engine of our economy.  We should help them weather the storm and create jobs.  This would be a real stimulus, but Washington hasn’t tried it yet.  Republicans have offered a plan that encourages investment and allows families and small businesses to keep more of what they earn to help get our economy moving again – a real stimulus plan.

“On health care, we’ve put forward a better alternative that will reduce costs, expand access, and increase the quality of care in a way Americans can afford – without new taxes, costly mandates, or a government takeover that puts bureaucrats in charge of medical decisions that should be made by doctors and patients.

“This week, the President and Democrats on Capitol Hill continued their push for Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax.  By imposing a tax on every American who drives a car or flips on a light switch, this plan will drive up the prices for food, gasoline, and electricity.  Even President Obama has said that energy prices will – quote – ‘skyrocket,’ and its consequences will be especially severe in rural communities across our country.  The Democrats’ bill will also ship millions of jobs to competitors like China and India.  A recent study estimated it will cost us between 2.3 and 2.7 million jobs every year.

“We should be creating American jobs – not destroying them.  That’s why House Republicans have proposed a better way: an ‘all-of-the-above’ strategy to clean up the environment, lower energy costs, and create more jobs.  Our plan will increase environmentally-safe energy production; promote the use of alternative fuels, such as nuclear, clean-coal, and renewable energy technologies; and encourage increased efficiency.

“Republicans are offering common-sense solutions that will make a real difference in creating jobs, making health care more affordable, and promoting a cleaner, healthier environment, and reducing energy costs.  We hope our Democrat colleagues will abandon their failed go-it-alone approach and work with us to make these reforms a reality.  Thanks for listening.”

Thank you sir, for standing up for all of America on the floor of the house Friday afternoon. Want you to know that you were CHEERED on by so many who stand behind you! Thank you. Keep up the good fight!

Representative Boehner...thank YOU for truly representing the middle class, here, in the Northern Cincinnati suburbs. I have recently relocated here, because the failed liberal/democrat policies in North East Ohio have RUINED the job markets up there. My home, in Medina County, has been on sale since January of this year...I'm expecting that it might not sell all of this year, and beyond. I am part of the "middle class" that the current administration says they are going to "cut taxes" on...and yet, all I have seen is increased taxes, and this energy bill, will merely create non-tax taxes, in increased energy costs. I am sending one child to college this fall, have to pay for two homes, have lost nearly $60,000 in home equity due to falling home prices, lost my job, and have watched the economy stagnate under an administration and congress showing their lack of experience and frankly, of fiscal responsibility. I certainly praise YOU for fighting the fight. Keep the faith, I predict that November elections will SOUNDLY support your perspective on things. Remember, it took 4 years of Jimmy Carter, to get 12 years of Reagan/Bush. Your Constituant, Michael Daugherty

Thank you, John, for speaking up and pointing out the many flaws of the recent cap and trade bill that passed the House on Friday. Many of us were watching you and were impressed with your passion on the ridiculousness of that bill. Just want to let you know that you do have support from citizens at times like this, and we would like to see you continue fighting for those of us that still believe in the Constitution, America the republic and capitalistic country

Sir, I wish to extend my gratitude for your speech on the floor of the house of representatives on June 26. It was very enlightening just how much the democrats had overstepped in their need to gain more power over the people of our country. There are many of us out here that are championing the cause you and others like you are fighting on behalf of the citizens of our nation. Once again, thank you.

Congressman Boehner, Thank you for your continued championing of the American people. It saddened me that some of your collegues in the House voted with their pockets instead of their brains, not considering who will be paying for whatever gains they think they may have scored for their home states. The fact that the vote was so close give me hope that more people are coming to their senses about the reckless spending bills that keep getting proposed by the left wing loons. The members of the House that truly care about this country and its people are becoming more evident every day. You, Michelle Bachman, Mike Pense, Eric Cantor and others are providing encouragement to us that our voices are indeed finally being heard. As for the healthcare initiative presented by Obama, we don't want it or need it. Please use whatever influence you can to see it's defeated.

Thank you John for going over that 3 o'clock amendment. Since I am retired I have the luxury to see how things are done in congress. Cap and trade is the largest tax program that congress could pass. It would hurt everyone with energy, food and transportation increases. You keep fighting and I'll keep fighting.

Thank you for all you are doing on behalf of Americans who still believe in the Constitution. I was proud of you on Friday, for calling attention to the ridiculous "Energy Bill," that was jammed through without even being read (except for your reading of some of the conflicts on Friday.) I realize that elections have consequences, but the ease with which Obama and Company are able to change our entire way of life is really scary. Please keep up your courageous good work, because you have more support than you realize out here in the real world. God Bless You!!!

Mr. Boehner, Though I am a Texas resident allow me to say THANK YOU! Thank you for maintaining a level of integrity in serving the people of your district that is becoming harder and harder to find. With all of the talk of 2012, I ask you sir, no, I implore you sir, please consider running for president of the United States of America-you have my vote and I know you are exactly what conservatives are looking for in their presidential candidate. Thank you again for your ethics, your integrity and your fervent work for the people of your district and the people of America! With kind regards, J. Ruiz

Thank you for being a normal politician. These days that is alot to ask for. Thank you for standing up and continuing to support the country as our founding fathers saw it, Not how Nancy Obama see's it. America is the land of freedom and oppurtunity for individuals, not oppurtunity for individuals to be slaves of big government. Keep up the good work. Jeremy

Hi John. The next time you're accused of being from the 'party of no' I want you to give them a message from me. Tell them you're from the party of 'oh HELL no', ok? Spread the word. And bear in mind that any battle they win is just another nail in their coffin. These idiots are their own worst enemies and a battle is not the war. And when we win the war, I want us to behave with some honor. Behaving like Democrats has cost us dearly - but not as dearly as the media has cost us. This eagle is sharpening her claws.

Congressman Boehner, thank you for your comments regarding the Energy Cap and Tax bill on the House floor on June 26. Since I am retired I was able to listen to all your comments. THANK YOU for standing up for the little guy. Living here in Illinois this bill will ridiculously hike electricity and all the goods we consume. On Friday I tried calling the White House for more than two hours to let them know I was against passage of this bill -- was not able to get thru. Also tried Melissa Bean's office -- same result. Please continue your good work.

First I would like to say a huge THANK YOU for being the ONLY republican that I know of who seems to actually give a crap about this God awful cap and trade bill. I have emailed my senators and the GOP and told them that I think we need to be taking a massive stand against this and that I am bitterly disappointed in the GOP for not making more of a stink about it. If we do not stand against this and do everything we can to stop it our country is doomed. I don't want to pay outrageous energy costs, pay people that won't work money for their electric bills or have my property value decrease because Nancy Pelosi and Obama want me to follow some crazy guidelines the state of California has set up for their homeowners ...... When is the republican party going to wake up??? What does this Administration have to do for the GOP to stand up and SHOUT - STOP THE TRAIN, THIS IS OUT OF CONTROL and we will NOT support it in any way shape form or fashion?? That is what the american people want from them if we are to EVER believe in them again. Right now from where I am sitting it appears that they DO NOT CARE AT ALL with the execption of you sir and to me that means that they will NOT change it if I vote for them in the future so why should I????? This is bad news for the GOP I hope they wake up before it is too late if it isn't already. By the way, I just sent a donation for the fight against this. Thanks again for caring.

Hello Sir, you have mentioned that Republicans have better plans, but we have not heard of any concrete and real plan, just saying that they have "better plans" will not work. Republicans have stayed in power for 8 years and economy went down, so please now let Democrats take care of it. Thanks
