Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) issued the following statement today after the U.S. Department of Labor reported that the nation’s economy lost 190,000 jobs in the month of October and the unemployment rate rose from 9.8 percent to 10.2 percent:

“The President has said that job creation is the ultimate measure of economic performance.  Today’s report is yet another reminder that American families and small businesses are still struggling, and the White House response is falling short.

“A jobless recovery and double-digit unemployment are not what the American people were promised.  Democrats pledged that the so-called ‘stimulus’ would create jobs immediately and keep the unemployment rate from going above eight percent.  But since the ‘stimulus’ was signed into law, more than three million private sector jobs have been lost.  Americans are asking “Where are the jobs?” but all they’ve gotten from Democrats in Washington is more spending and more debt.

“Now Speaker Pelosi is pressing ahead with a $1.3 trillion government takeover of health care, endorsed by President Obama, that will destroy 5.5 million jobs according to a methodology developed by his own senior economists.  CBO has confirmed that our health care plan will lower premiums by up to 10 percent, especially for small businesses, making health care more affordable and helping create jobs.  In contrast, Speaker Pelosi’s plan includes job-killing taxes and mandates that will hurt small businesses.  For the sake of our families and small businesses, this job-killing bill deserves to be defeated.”

NOTE:  President Obama said in September, “This is something that I ask every single one of my economic advisers every single day, because I know that ultimately the measure of an economy is, ‘is it producing jobs.’” (CNN’s “State of the Union,” 9/20/09) A memo from Alex Brill of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) sent to Congressman Boehner this morning notes that the Pelosi health care bill being endorsed by the White House today will hurt small businesses, while the alternative put forth by Republicans will help them.
